AI Engineer Intern
About the role
A learning role working directly with Aperio's lead on the part of the product that matters most: turning a student's wrong answer into an explanation that actually helps. You would be given real work, with someone experienced reviewing it.
What you would do
- Work with the lead on features that turn a student's attempt into useful feedback.
- Build and test prompts and evaluations — measuring whether an explanation is correct and useful, not just whether it reads well.
- Write the Python that connects model output to the product.
- Check output carefully. A confident, wrong explanation given to a student is worse than no explanation at all.
- Write down what you tried and what happened, so the next person does not repeat it.
What we're looking for
- Working toward, or recently finished, a degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or something similar.
- Comfortable writing Python.
- Some hands-on experience with language models — coursework, personal projects, or research all count.
- Careful about correctness. A lot of this job is checking whether something that sounds right actually is.
- Happy to learn from review and to ask questions early rather than guess.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
